Qu’ils Mangeant Du Brioche

I see media figures that Michelle Obama’s separate trip to Hawaii will cost the taxpayer $100,000 or less, for example $63,000. Nonsense. Preumably these are Obama-friendly media trying to minimize the cost of Michelle’s Pelosi syndrome. Air Force One, quite apart from anything else, costs $180,000 per hour to operate. It will drop Michelle and then return to pick up Barack, taking approximately 18 hours of flight time, more or less depending on winds. This means Michelle’s extra days in Hawaii will cost the taxpayer in excess of $3 million for her transportation costs alone, not including any additional security costs.

She doesn’t care. So the peasants have to work a little harder. It’s good to be the queen.

    Two things.
    1. This Obama hating stuff undermines your other arguments and clearly lays out an emotional reaction and bias that will hurt your trading and the quality of your advice. Bush was no worse, and his successor won’t be better either. At the end of the day it hurts your blog and hurts your trading. Stop reading Fox News.

    2. That number looks flat-out wrong and is seriously suspect given the innumeracy of both the original source and the reporting news organisation. The marginal cost of one hour of extra flying is probably in the ~$25,000-$50,000 per hour range like every other 747.

In any case this is a drop in the bucket when you have candidates who have histories of cutting the budgets of organisations that are mandated to protect taxpayers and have a history of doing this effectively.

Just for the record, I don’t hate the Obamas. I despise them.

Given that Air Force One is no ordinary 747 – other than the airframe and engines – I see no reason to doubt that there are extraordinary costs. But even accepting your number, the $100,000 and under figures are still wildly understated.

The likelihood that their successors will be no better does not justify their behavior.

    Their predecessors were equally bad.

However you didn’t show similar distain for Bush II. It’s a huge personal bias and will hurt your investing.

Correct, I did not. Bush 2 had his faults – quite a few of them, in fact, , but in my view he was basically an honest man and Laura was a lady in the best sense of the word.

It is not a bias – it is an opinion. And as a practical matter it has nothing to do with my investing.

Anyway, that’s enough from me on this subject.

I appreciate the response – it’s always the same corollary to Clarke’s Law: Any incompetence that is sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from malice.

Hate Obama or not, we cannot expect better from America’s politicians. Reality has totally disappeared from mainstream discussion.
