The Washington Monument Strategy

California government is desperate for more revenue to pay for the bureaucracy. Now even Jerry Brown knows that citizens don’t like bureaucracies, so the threat of cutting down the bureaucracy won’t count for much. So he has recycled the traditional Federal strategy – closing the Washington Monument to punish taxpayers for budget cuts – into closing California’s parks. Now people in California do love the parks – as well they should – so maybe they will cough up more money to keep them open, allowing the bureaucracy to continue to flourish.

This is sort of like the Federal notion that Social Security and Medicare should be cut in order to fund more military spending. Politicians know no shame.
