The drug trade is responsible for funding terrorists and criminals around the world, both the private ones and the governments. Massive bureaucracies depend on the drug trade for justification and funding and, despite their protestations, have no real interest in stopping it. Token efforts are made to control it, but their only effect is to help keep prices high.
It is therefore with considerable hope that I applaud the government of Uruguay (Uruguay? really?) for ending the prohibition of marijuana. As Uruguay’s President, Jose Mujica, says:
“We’ve given this market as a gift to the drug traffickers and that is more destructive socially than the drug itself, because it rots the whole of society,”
