Crime Does Pay

In order to borrow more money and stay within its required debt/GDP ratio, Italy will include prostitution, smuggling and illegal drug sales in the gross domestic product calculation this year.

Of course, this is just following the example of the US, which a year ago “re-based” America’s GDP by $500 billion when it arbitrarily decided to include ‘intangibles’ (in other words, numbers we just made up) in GDP so as to cut over 5% from the US Debt/GDP ratio). Then Spain did something similar. Then Greece. Then the UK. Now Italy. At least Italy has organized crime, so it may be able to get accurate reports. Surely the mafiosi will want to take credit for making a positive contribution to the country.

There is no length to which government will not go to spend more money on itself.
