Requiescat In Pacem

Dr. Gene Amdahl, architect of the IBM System/360 and founder of Amdahl Corporation, died on Tuesday aged 92.

A brilliant engineer and strong leader, Gene was credited by T.J. Watson as being the father of System/360, the dominant mainframe computer architecture which is still in widespread use today.

I worked for Amdahl Corporation for most of my career. Although Gene left the company a few years after I joined, his spirit lingered on for a long time. He had recruited and inspired an executive team that shared his values, so that even though I did not know him well on a personal level he played a major role in my working life.

Thanks, Gene.
